I can't understand how it even ran with the manifold loose as it was. As you look at the back or pully end of the engine on the right side is No 1 flywheel end and 2 on the pully end. On the left flywheel end 3 and 4. Took the serial number off the block and traced it to 1966 only engine. I have had a popping on the no 3 or 4 side ever since I bought it. Thought it was just a valve that was too tight. Have adjusted the valves many times to get rid of it. Thougth I had a burnt valve. Now with the intake buttoned down as it should be, runs great. First time in my life I have ever had something like this happen. Yes it is a screemer, believe it or not, I was doing 65 or better coming home. Engine sounded a little different but it still ran like it wasn't evern hurting, even started like it had no problems. I love the old VWs and always have. Now to put the new carb on my other 66 bug and get her back on the road. Carl
