I can't understand how it even ran with the manifold loose as it was. As you look at the back or pully end of the engine on the right side is No 1 flywheel end and 2 on the pully end. On the left flywheel end 3 and 4. Took the serial number off the block and traced it to 1966 only engine. I have had a popping on the no 3 or 4 side ever since I bought it. Thought it was just a valve that was too tight. Have adjusted the valves many times to get rid of it. Thougth I had a burnt valve. Now with the intake buttoned down as it should be, runs great. First time in my life I have ever had something like this happen. Yes it is a screemer, believe it or not, I was doing 65 or better coming home. Engine sounded a little different but it still ran like it wasn't evern hurting, even started like it had no problems. I love the old VWs and always have. Now to put the new carb on my other 66 bug and get her back on the road. Carl

Stick a piece of beer can under the carb heater pipe and grab another horse or two. Better yet...take the carb off the other engine and put two on the trike!!!

Got another delima with my Tryke. Went to Leasburg Fl for the big biker rally Saturday. Had a great time till I was 35 miles from home. At state roads 46 and 46A, right at the light, engine shut down and would not start again. Thought it was points. Changed them and the condenser out and still no fire. Getting no voltage from the - neg side of the coil. Called my handy road side service Good Sam Club and asked for a wrecker to take me home. Got home and Sunday scrounged an old coil out of my trailer of VW parts and installed it. Darn thing started right up and ran for about five minutes then shut down again. Now won't start. Pulled out my VW repair manual and with a new cup of coffee in hand began to re-read and do the tests to see what is wrong. All tests from condenser to coil check out as good. When I disconnected the wire from the coil to the distributer and put my test light from it to the side of the distributer, the light did not go out. My mind said shorted distributer. Went back to my parts trailer and pulled out another distributor thinking I would just change it out to see what happens. Took the cap off the new dis and found it is electronic. Neat little module in there but no points. The thing has two wires coming from it. Since I have no instructions and have never messed with one of these things, I am not sure where the wires go. My logic dictates that the red wire should go to the + pos side of the dist and the - Neg shold go to the black wire to the -Neg side but am not sure so after posting here, I am going to call around to some bug shops and check it out. Will let you know what I find out and what I find was the problem. Who knows, I haven't yet checked the fuel pump. Carl
