 Space is an issue here too. The 12x16 shed, largest the city will let me have without a permit and permanent foundation, looked pretty good when I put it up but now is full of my 'stuff'. No junk just 'stuff'.
I started in this as a hobby too but ended up taking a small engine course at voc school so I could have a shot at steady work. Jobs were scarce in the early 70's. Can't say I have regretted it but I could have made a lot better living doing something else. Oh well, at 63 a little late to change.

Several years ago I built a small utility shed, 10 X 16 just to put our lawn equipment in, not the lawnmowers but things like the rake and the shovel, and all sorts of assorted lawn care and flower garden stuff. I made it large enough so that we could fit our stuff in there and still have room in case we wanted to put some boxes or something in there. I even built three shelves on each end to put stuff on. I swear the wife went out and bought stuff just to fill up that shed.

Anyway, the garage is going to have twelve foot walls and special trusses that allow you to put in a floor so that we can have storage space up on top. Hopefully this will work out better for us in-so-far as having room to store stuff. But just to be on the safe side I may have to hide my wife's purse just to keep her from buying stuff to fill it up.

The wife says that I have too much junk and I should get rid of it. The truth of the matter is, I don't have any junk, all I have is "good stuff". But my wife, now she has a lot of junk. :)

Your post made me smile.
I have a 30 x 40 pole building with loft and a 10 ft overhang. 10 x 30 is my lapidary/smithy/office. Due to almost 2 years of illness I couldnt even fend off "my space" 6 van loads of her "junk" has been sent to Goodwill with 1 more comming. Now that I an healthy again the 30 x 30 is next. It has 2 doors and i could not even get a rider in it 2 days ago. It is packed with her stuff the loft included. I have enough material left over to inclose the over hang. That will be hers and I get my building back. She can keep the loft. That is the plan. I hope it works.
So I do understand your post. Good luck on the garage. I hope you can keep some of it. Maybe I need to hide purse, check book, credit card and my wallet ;)

< grins > I can see where this is going.

One of my customers has me laying down a plywood floor and building cabinets for a 12 x 16 room in her barn. It took me four hours the other day just to empty out all of her "stuff" so i could get in there to work. Considering all of the "stuff" in the other half of the barn there's no way it's gonna be anough storage.

This could keep me in work for years.

Who says there's no money in junk ? :D
