Free Junk For The Week

Postby slemeron » Sat Apr 14, 2012 6:20 am

Free Murray push mower. Replaced safty cable. 15 $ It runs good.
Free Huskee push mower. Cleaned carb. Runs good.
3 free Chraftsman weed eaters. so far I got 1 running but not so good.
Last night I got a Ranch King Pro 42 inch hydro. I just put gas in and it started. It has a flat tire and the owner said it throws deck belts. It is a very clean mower. No rust on the deck. No faded paint. It started raining so I had to quit on it. I havent installed lights in my shop. Maybe I will get to it today. I also found a Snapper rider that I might drag home. I suspect that it needs a valve adjustment like the old Murray. It does not want to turn over But you can turn it by hand.
I am starting to think that this is turning into an obsession ;)

Like anything else, if you start doing it all the time it starts turning into work and when that happens, it ceases to be fun.

depends on your mindset - we have a 10 day backlog of work, Im putting in 16 hour days just to keep up, going crazy with paperwork, and other shop management things, and I'm still having a blast... and making a pile of cash to boot.

I was under the impression this was his new "hobby" and not his actual job. Assuming I am correct and this is his hobby, if he continually does this day in and day out, it will be more like a job than a hobby.

I used to repair and build computers in my basement. I started doing it for dun, but it quickly became a second job. Every day after I got thru work at my regular job, I went home and repaired, built/rebuilt computers. At first it was fun, then after awhile it wasn't fun anymore, it was a second job. The money was good, but there are many things in life more important to me than money. Taking my wife out to dinner, playing catch in the backyard with my grandson, helping our daughter remodel her bathroom, stuff like that I place more importance on than making more money. But, I guess that's just me.

Anyway, I finally quit working on computers for just anybody, and now I do it only for myself and for a few close friends who have computer problems. Other than that I just turn down the work unless I am bored and want something to do. But that seldom happens because with the early Spring weather we are having, I have been going golfing practically every day. Also, in a week or so I am having some concrete poured for our new 24 X 36 garage. I will be building it myself so that should keep me busy for at least a week or two.

I seem to get a lot more done around here without people banging on the door with equipment to fix. I have one mower in the garage right now.....gave the guy one of mine and told him I'd call when I got it done sometime...

JimW. Watch out, once the garage is finised you will have a place to put more things to work on. Shucks, I added on to my shop because I didn't have room to walk around. Lasted for about a month then I filled up that space with more junk. Carl

Hi all
It is just a "hobby". It started when I realized that I had no usable lawn equiptment this spring. Now that I have enough junk running I am going to slow down ;) I dont plan on doing it for a living. I would go broke very fast. I do enjoy tinkering and cant fit a car in my shop. I did get some lights hung so now I can work after dark. My other hobby is silver smithing and lapidary. I do have a 10 X 30 shop just for that. With a 60 hr a week job 2 kids in sports and my hobbies I dont have time for much more. I did drag a old Rally tiller home yesterday. If I can get it running I might try to put out a garden.

Carl, yeah, I know what you mean. Several years ago I built a small utility shed, 10 X 16 just to put our lawn equipment in, not the lawnmowers but things like the rake and the shovel, and all sorts of assorted lawn care and flower garden stuff. I made it large enough so that we could fit our stuff in there and still have room in case we wanted to put some boxes or something in there. I even built three shelves on each end to put stuff on. I swear the wife went out and bought stuff just to fill up that shed.

Anyway, the garage is going to have twelve foot walls and special trusses that allow you to put in a floor so that we can have storage space up on top. Hopefully this will work out better for us in-so-far as having room to store stuff. But just to be on the safe side I may have to hide my wife's purse just to keep her from buying stuff to fill it up.

The wife says that I have too much junk and I should get rid of it. The truth of the matter is, I don't have any junk, all I have is "good stuff". But my wife, now she has a lot of junk. :)

Your post made me smile.
I have a 30 x 40 pole building with loft and a 10 ft overhang. 10 x 30 is my lapidary/smithy/office. Due to almost 2 years of illness I couldnt even fend off "my space" 6 van loads of her "junk" has been sent to Goodwill with 1 more comming. Now that I an healthy again the 30 x 30 is next. It has 2 doors and i could not even get a rider in it 2 days ago. It is packed with her stuff the loft included. I have enough material left over to inclose the over hang. That will be hers and I get my building back. She can keep the loft. That is the plan. I hope it works.
So I do understand your post. Good luck on the garage. I hope you can keep some of it. Maybe I need to hide purse, check book, credit card and my wallet ;)
