will a 20hp magnum fit?

Postby old iron » Wed Aug 08, 2012 5:46 pm

I have found a 20hp Kohler magnum with a horizontal shaft in a Craftsman III. Will this fit in a simplicity Sunstar? Both do have an electric PTO on shaft at front of tractor. Intake and Carb are different. I need to know if it will work but don't know the engine numbers for either engine. Thanks

thats kind of like asking a doctor "I found an old pair of prescription glasses at a yard sale, will they fit me?"

without engine numbers, you'd have to measure out the crank PTO end, compare the wiring harness, and measure the engine envelope.

so basically the answer at this point is "It might, but then it might not"

In theory yes. With enough re-engineering you could fit a 500 cid V-10 in a Volkswagon Beetle. In addition to what BGS told you include control hook ups, exhaust system, and even charging system as the replacement may not be enough. Electrical wiring in general may not match color for color so a schematic of both is need to get it right.

OldIron,

If you're replacing a Kohler Magnum with a Kohler Magnum....that's
a GOOD THING because the exhaust system will be the same. If you
are replacing a Briggs opposed twin with this Kohler Magnum...the
exhaust system would have to be modified to fit exhaust ports and
the direction of the exhaust you need. Throttle hook-up, length and
diameter of PTO end of crank where elec clutch mounts? Output of
charging system on the Magnum that is sufficient to power the elec.
PTO clutch? If you've already purchased this engine....I'd just sit
them side-by-side and start comparing. Wiring harness hook-ups
will also be different I would think, but that can be dealt with if the
alternator system is sufficient for the needs of this tractor? As
bgsengine said...your question is very open-ended, and you're asking
us to "conger up" an answer for you with very little information to go on.

I once put a 16 Briggs twin in a Gilson Super 8....looked funny but it'd pop a wheelie in third.

I wish i could give the numbers but you would have to ask Kohler why they quit using stamped tin for the numbers and went to a sticker that the numbers fade. I thought I was on a forum where some people were professionals and worked on small engines that may know them by the tractor they were put in. Or maybe some hobbiest's that may know Kohler magnums or people that may have repowered a Sunstar that could give me ideas as to what will fits maybe a Vangaurd that could be put in with minimal modificatins.Guess I didn't catch the fine print that this is a make you feel stupid cause the numbers can't be read and my disabled broke piggy bank won't allow the purchase of a new magnum forum. Oh that's right they don't make the magnum anymore so you have to rely on HELP from others. I have seen some good advice on here but the sharp noses that are stuck up in the air cause I was in a different professioin and not working on small engines at the time of my severe accident that left me disabled also made me the stupid one for putting a sticker on that faded so the numbers can't be read. I was hoping for some that did respond would because of their experience and advice given to others. Sorry if I offended those that I was hoping would help me. Just another sleepless night in pain. Please. I need help not sarcasm. The Sunstar has power steering and lift. My wife has to do the mowing and snow removal now so I'm trying to get this set up for her. I hope you're never in this situation. God bless

You got some pretty good responses here based on the thin info you provided. If you simply do the things suggested you ought to be able to figure it out. We aren't mind readers.

We have 4 things, 2 machines and 2 engines, no model numbers for any of them??? We don't even know the brand of Craftsman engine. Even if one person here had experience with all 4 items, you have provided pitiful description for someone to come to the rescue yet you want to blame the world for your problems, which we knew nothing about so how could we possibly associate your disability with intelligence. Its like asking about a small block Chevy what response will you get? There are at least 7 cid versions and over 55 years of them out there with numerous changes over the years.

Oh, and you aren't the only disabled dude out there so stop the blaming people you don't know for your troubles.

Not to mention that the Sunstar came in the different sizes...a 14 ,16 and an 18...just a quick glance shows the 18 even had both a Briggs and a Kohler engine.
If I asked for help by saying "I have a tire...will it fit my car?" I sure as heck wouldn't get uppity if no one could answer.
Do you have any idea how long Kohler made "Magnums" and how many dozens of variations of that "Magnum" were made. The older and newer ones don't look anything like each other....

Even saying right up front that the tag could not be read would be good. Stay on the forum awhile and see how many posters don't provide any numbers even when it turns out that they have them.

 If it were me, I go to, http://www.simplicity.com or Yahoo group Simplicity-Allis-Chambers and ask the question. I have stuffed different engines in a lot of tractors, but it is all trial and error and some modifcations, that has all ready been stated. Old Iron, for the uppity part, that was uncalled for. :usa:
