Toro 724 (38050) carburetor settings

Postby sjt78 » Tue Nov 17, 2009 1:49 pm

Hi,
I have my father-in-law's 1978 Toro 724 in my garage that he brought to me due to it only running on choke. I opened the carb up and found some pieces missing(?) such as the float needle and possibly a float spring. The carb was shooting gas onto the muffler which I discovered was the reason the muffler was oily/wet. So I bought a repair kit for the carb and replaced all of the parts (beforehand I cleaned/degreased the carb in my ultrasonic cleaner until it was squeaky clean), but did not really mess with the idle screw setting or the bolt that holds the bowl on (not sure what that one is called)...basically slapped it together and crossed my fingers. It doesn't leak, but it doesn't start either...pulled and pulled. Mind you, he brought it to me being able to start...so I need to figure out how to get it running again. Are there any quick and dirty carb settings for me to get this engine to pop and then I can fine tune it? I also plan on replacing the spark plug, but will leave that until after I get it running as I know the one in there is used but still works. Thanks for any help you can provide. The snow is going to start flying soon here in Buffalo and I need to get this machine back to him ASAP.

You just need to do a more thorough job on the carb. Clean the whole thing, it's small; every little bitty hole with little bitty wire, (look closely for them). You mentioned the idle screw, how bout the idle mixture screw? Might be best to just replace the carb if it was missing parts.

The needle seat seat was installed in the correct direction. I might have to take a look at adjusting the float height, did not do that. The carb came out of the ultrasonic cleaner extremely clean, almost looked new with all the gunk that was in it in suspended in the 1:1 water/simple green mixture. The carb worked beforehand and now it is super clean with new parts so I think something is not adjusted correctly, cleanliness should not be an issue. I guess I'm looking for some reference settings, such as screw in the idle adjustment screw all the way and then back it out 2.5 turns, etc. Thanks.

It may look super-clean, but you normally can't see the plugged jets that cause the trouble. Mixture screw turns, 1 1/2, are just a rough setting to get it started, then you have to adjust for best performance. Never known float height to keep one from starting.

Thanks Scott for the offer. I am going to try some of these suggestions first and if I can't seem to get it going I'll take you up on your offer.

When I got home from work earlier I tried Dan Swami's advice "main is 1.5. idle is 1 turn" and got it running. I knew once I pressed the primer bulb that it would work as I could now hear gas being sucked into the carb. I had it running for about 10-15 seconds on half choke when I looked up to see what my 2 y.o. son was doing and he was standing in the garage crying. I shut it down and ran to pick him up, he got so scared by the sound of the engine. I thought he would be ok as he was a good 40 feet away, but it frightened him. So I know it will run now, but I will have to wait until I have some alone time outside to get it running for a while and do some fine tuning. I actually did 2.5 turns on the main, and 1 turn on the idle as I couldn't remember the numbers exactly, but it must be close enough to get it going. I'll let you all know how I make out and if I have any other questions. Thank you everyone!
