Briggs kick back

Postby bill » Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:16 pm

I have minor knowledge on small engines. working 5HP Briggs that kicks back when pulling starting cord. Replaced flywheel key, no help. Previous post on a Tecumseh had similar problem as what I have. Will change spark plug and put in new fuel. What torque on head bolts?

Norm:

Your trying to scare off another newby? LOL

Bill; Norm has a point. If we are talking about a mower it could be a loose blade.

You say you replaced the flywheel key, was it sheared to begin with? A common mistake people make is replacing a sheared key and not cleaning all of the rust from the crankshaft. Even a very small bit of rust will cause a new key to shear almost instantly. Also make sure the flywheel is torqued to correct spec, post your numbers and we can get you the specs. ;)

Bill:

I received you message re: my post in response to your question. I certainly did not mean to make a joke of you. You ask a question hoping to get some help. That's what I believe I gave you.

My comment to Norm was in the spirit of the friendly banter we often engage in on this forum.

I too am a longtime member of this great forum. You must admit that when a member seems to be on his first post, one might assume they are a newbie. I now realize that you were also involved with the old forum. I did not mean to offend you or Norm.

I apologize for any hurt feelings. I will try not to include any comment in future replies to any questions you may post. My only goal is to try to help; its not to make a joke of anyone.

I hope this clears up things between us.

You really need to post the engine numbers bill for a better answer. flywheel nut/starter clutch need to be pretty tight or it will just keep shearing the key as mentioned,points/condensor? We can't determine what you have or give you torque values unless you get us the numbers.

John..your intentions are always good,we know that.
