The governor is needed for two reason. One to assist the engine in maintaining its set speed and two, to keep it from running out of control.
According to all my teachings and the Tec books I have read, the governor is necessary in some form. If my memory serves me right, my old Cushman scooter (been 45 years) had a governor? Carl _________________ Certified Beer drinker.

Tim,
thanks for the diagram.......that was great.....
To everyone who replied thanks a ton. There is such a wealth of knowledge on here, its greatly appreciated that you guys took the time to comment.
Just to add to this, I spoke with the previous owner and he let me know that the rod was not broken but instead the engine was disassembled last year for a freshen up, and while he was there he removed the governor setup.
I had to confirm this in my own head and got in touch with some "Mower Racing" fellas.....and I had several of them confirm that it was best to remove the governor internally to avoid having the weights spray into the engine at higher then stock RPMs
So in a nut shell, it will be free to rev up with no limitation.....So it will have to be watched. Im hooking up a return spring setup that was recommended by someone, to make sure the throttle doesn't decide to stick open.
Again thanks guys.HAPPY HOLIDAYS |

BG if that hole isn't plugged, do so. If left open it will blow oil out of it and destroy the function of the cranckcase breather. _________________ NEVADA! The last free state. |

| Thanks for the reminder Nevada.....The JB weld is curing as we speak.....When the weather breaks again or the garage has more room(which ever comes first)....I will tear into it and re assemble with the correct components to have it operating the way it was meant to.........Thanks again..........Eric |

| BG, you may have more problems than you want. Most stock rods will not handle the high RPMS that engine will produce without a gov'n. Also if that engine has a counter balance system and uses a dog bone, the dog bone will not handle the high RPM's. So do not be shocked if you hear a big bang from that engine. Don B. |

I just can't imagine a competent adult over-reving an engine. Motorcycles, scooters and most cars don't have governors. _________________ "Inspect and repair as necessary" |

With all the chucked rods I have seen over the years I would hate to tell all of them they were stupid. Not to their face anyway, a lot of them were bigger then me. _________________ NEVADA! The last free state. |
